Standard Hot Tapping Prochedure
1. Engineering Preparation
Prior to mobilization, detailed technical data is collected and evaluated:
- Pipeline specification and material verification
- Pipe diameter and wall thickness confirmation
- Operating pressure and temperature analysis
- Flow condition evaluation
- Branch fitting and valve compatibility review
- Installation orientation assessment
- Site access and equipment clearance study
A job-specific hot tapping procedure is developed before execution.
2. Equipment Preparation
All equipment undergoes inspection and functional testing:
- Selection of appropriate tapping machine
- Cutter and pilot drill preparation
- Adapter and flange compatibility check
- Hydraulic or manual power system testing
- Pressure testing and leak verification
Only fully verified equipment is approved for field deployment.
3. Site Preparation & Safety Control
Before starting operation:
- Authorized supervisor and safety personnel present onsite
- Qualified hot tap technicians assigned
- Lifting equipment readiness confirmed
- PPE compliance enforced according to facility requirement
- Work permit and checklist authorization completed
Safety compliance is mandatory prior to operation.
4. Hot Tapping Operation
Execution sequence includes:
- Installation of full-opening hot tap valve
- Alignment and installation of tapping machine
- Nitrogen leak testing up to allowable pressure limit
- Controlled cutter engagement and penetration
- Pressure bleeding through safe direction system
- Continuous cutting until clean tapping hole achieved
- Retrieval of coupon and safe equipment removal
Once initiated, the hot tapping process continues without interruption until completion.
5. Post Operation Verification
After completion:
- Valve closure verification
- Equipment depressurization
- Environmental protection monitoring
- Coupon inspection and documentation
Operational integrity of the pipeline remains maintained throughout the process.
